I originally drew this with the intention of publishing it in Crisp #4 but, as there never was a Crisp #4, it has remained unpublished. Around the time I wrote it, there was an excellent small press comic called Goathland coming out. Goathland was a diary comic about the artist, John Welding (who I have never met or had any contact with), and his girlfriend moving out to the countryside to become artists. The whole thing was drawn in pen and ink and I was struggling to use a pen and ink myself at the time (I've since decided to go back to using a brush for most of my inking). Also, me and my girlfriend were about to move out to the suburbs and my girlfriend kept insisting we were actually moving out to the countryside (I guess there are some green areas near us but we are really just in the limbo between South-London and the countryside and still within the M25), so I decided to do this parody. As you can see from the dates on the strip, it took me over a year to get around drawing this diary-style comic once I'd written it (James Kochalka I ain't!) and it has been gathering dust ever since. After we'd lived out in the suburbs for a while, I had ideas for quite a few more of these and they will hopefully become parts of a few longer stories I have in mind for the near future. Sincere apologies to John Welding. |
